5 Ways you can get it under control!

Increasingly, we are seeing younger patients with gum recession – a problem once more commonly associated with gum disease and ageing. A major contributor is brushing with poor technique or with too much pressure. Toothbrush abrasion can expose the roots of your teeth and your teeth enamel to cavity-causing bacteria, thin your teeth enamel so that the yellow dentin inside shows through, and make your teeth sensitive to hot and cold.
Here are 5 tips to avoid damaging your enamel and gums when brushing…
• It is important to massage your gums especially at the base of each tooth where plaque can accumulate and contribute to gum disease. The key is to do it gently.
• Remember that the pressure you apply to each tooth is concentrated in such a small area that it has a much greater impact than you may notice.
• Use a soft, round-tipped toothbrush, twice a day, and keep your brush at a 45-degree angle so it’s half on the gum and half on the tooth. Brushing – not scrubbing – should take about three minutes.
• Take time to thoroughly brush the back corners of your mouth and behind your back molars. This area can be challenging to clean, so for most people, it’s especially vulnerable to problems.
• Ask us to show you the correct brushing and flossing techniques and for help to establish the proper and safest amount of brushing pressure.

Wishing that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween!

Halloween Candy vs. Cavities: Don’t Make Kids Choose
Don't deny your children the Halloween experience. That can send the entirely wrong message -- deprivation -- and make candy seem even more irresistible, leading to other problems. They may end up sneaking sweets or eating too much candy once they're out on their own. Instead, let them have the joy of Halloween in all its sticky goodness and the experience of going to a party or trick-or-treating.
After your children get back from trick-or-treating or a party, go through their bags of Halloween candy together. Tell them to each pick the 10 or so (whatever number you decide, based on factors such as age) treats they want the most.
Get the unpicked treats out of sight. You can donate them to a food bank or freeze them if you can't bear to throw them out.
This can also be a good time to teach (or remind) children that it isn't just excess sugar that can lead to cavities. Snacks such as pretzels, with starches that stay in the mouth longer, can also lead to cavities, as can fruit juices.
Letting children help decide what is a reasonable amount of candy to keep has benefits beyond good oral health. The message isn't "candy is bad," but that candy and other sweets, in excess, can lead to cavities. Children learn two important lessons:

  • How to control their diets
  • That what they eat relates to oral health, not just physical health

Baby FIRST
For several years, pregnant women have been cautioned about the dangers of eating fish with high levels of mercury. Mercury readily passes the placental barrier and concentrates in the red blood cells of the fetus. At birth, infants are also susceptible to mercury exposure through breast milk.
Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned about mercury found in amalgam (silver-colored) dental fillings, saying the mercury may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses. While the American Dental Association (ADA) belies amalgam fillings remain safe for patients based on many government studies and scientific reviews, the FDA is conducting a review of mercury contained in fillings, to be completed by mid-year 2009.
When amalgams are placed in or removed from teeth, they release mercury vapor; mercury vapor is also released through chewing. If you’re interested in exploring the alternatives to dental amalgams, we’d be pleased to talk with you about composite fillings that resemble the natural tooth color.
Until the FDA report is completed, we encourage all of our pregnant patients to continue to see us and discuss options with us. Remember that dental care is particularly important during pregnancy because gingivitis and other oral health problems may be linked to pregnancy complications. We’ll keep you posted as information is available.
And in the meanwhile, if you are expecting, be sure to get lots of sleep now... Life will soon be a little different!

No Lemons Please!

There are many ways you can abnormally wear and tear your teeth without being aware of it. A trip to the dentist is the best way to detect it, but there are some signs and symptoms you can pick up on your own.
Erosion is due to chemical reactions in your mouth.

For example, lemons and other citrus fruits contain powerful natural acids that dissolve the protective covering on your teeth over time. Phosphoric acids that are found in many soft drinks are strong enough to dissolve an iron nail. If your teeth are sensitive to hot, cold, sugar, or brushing, erosion may be the problem.
Abrasion looks and feels like erosion, but its cause is mechanical rather than chemical. The effect is like sandpaper on wood, and the culprit is usually brushing the wrong way. Brushing side to side instead of in a circular motion can wear teeth severely over time. Hard-bristled brushes and toothpicks can also do damage. Using your teeth to cut thread and open hairpins can cut small notches on the edges of your teeth that can fracture the tooth. Grinding your teeth at night can also wear away teeth and leave them overly sensitive.
The best way to stop erosion and abrasion is to eliminate the cause and treat the damage. If you notice signs of abnormal wear and tear on your teeth, bring them into the practice for a checkup.

Change for the best

The holiday season will be here soon, with all those wonderful family get-togethers, terrific meals, parties, snacks, more great meals, and then all those great leftovers, and more cakes, cookies, and pies. You get the picture! Unfortunately, so does your body, including your teeth and gums. This sudden nutritional change can put you and your dental health under serious stress.
The key is nutritional balance. The real problem is the constant bombardment of sugars and starches in the mouth that combine to fuel the plaque-producing bacteria that attack your tooth enamel. Saliva, your natural bacteria cleanser, becomes overwhelmed, and the plaque takes up permanent residence. So here are some helpful hints to get you through to the new year happy and healthy.
Along with all the holiday goodies, make sure you eat good amounts of green, orange, and yellow vegetables and fruits for their high vitamin A and D content. Your body will also give thanks for regular high-fiber breakfasts and snacks. Citrus fruits, yogurt, and other dairy products will provide plaque-fighting vitamins and minerals. Try to avoid constant sugary snacks, and don’t sip sugar-filled sodas for long periods of time.
But please make sure you give your oral and nutritional health a helping hand during the holiday season by taking the occasional time out from all those temptations. And never ever forget to brush and floss after every meal.

Over 60?

Your oral health is very important, and this is why we use technology that dramatically improves our ability to screen for oral abnormalities that could lead to cancer. Because early detection is essential to increase chances for successful treatment, we always check your entire mouth. We use the VELscope®, a state-of-the-art, painless, non-invasive screening tool that helps us to see what we can’t see with the unaided eye during your routine oral cancer checkup.
What can you expect during a VELscope examination? After conducting a thorough oral cancer examination, we’ll use a handheld device that will shine a blue light into your mouth. We’ll then examine the tissues through a special eyepiece. This technology takes advantage of your mouth’s natural fluorescence which is normally invisible. Using the blue light, however, we can look for specific changes in the color or structure of your oral tissues that might be indicative of abnormal cells. It takes about five potentially life-saving minutes.
We want our patients to have a bright and smiling future. Recently, studies show more than 25% of oral cancer victims have been under age forty and did not fall into any category of the known risk-factors like tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, or being HIV positive. And especially because in its earliest, most treatable stages, oral cancer usually causes no pain or discomfort, we’ll perform the VELscope examination for all of our adult patients once every year.

SEEMS SIMPLE?

As if good teeth are not a sufficient reason to keep your gums and mouth in peak condition, your overall good health is ample motivation.
Gum disease – gingivitis – commonly caused by inadequate brushing and flossing, and lack of regular professional cleaning, is present in about 90% of the population; that in turn leads to more serious periodontal disease, which causes or exacerbates other bodily health issues, including holistic well-being.
Conditions caused directly by gingivitis and periodontal disease include: bad breath, gum abscesses, tooth loss, digestive disorders, and oral pain. Plus it results in greater health care costs to you. Prevention is better than the cure!
Because the micro-organisms and bacteria in your mouth travel into your bloodstream, your mouth becomes the gateway to your overall health. For example, there is a labor-inducing fluid in oral bacteria that is proven to cause premature and low-weight births. In diabetics, who are more susceptible to various other diseases, studies show that regular professional dental cleaning helps control their blood sugar levels.
Most of the oral bacteria that enter the bloodstream are harmless, but in a weakened heart or compromised immune system, opportunistic bacteria increase the risk of stroke or heart attack. Periodontal disease can also worsen respiratory problems and complicate osteoporosis.

Be sure to brush twice a day and floss daily, but there is no substitute for regular professional cleaning to prevent gum disease. Call today!
